As an instructor of emerging media studies, my primary goal is to prepare my students to succeed in a rapidly changing media environment either as industry or academic leaders.
My teaching specialties include:
-
1
Computational research methods
I have developed courses and workshops to introduce "big data" analytics to students without a programming background. Subjects include text mining, sentiment analysis, dictionary-based analysis, machine learning, crowdsourcing, and semantic/social network analysis. Students gain hands-on research experience using programs such as R/R studio, Ucinet, and NodeXL. -
2
Interaction design
This series of courses introduce students to principles of interactivity and a practical experience in designing interactive work. Topics include interaction design, user experience design, information architecture, and usability testing. Web-design-related skills such as HTML/CSS, Wordpress, and Google Analytics are covered. -
3
Communication theories
My teaching of this area focuses on the application of classic communication theories such as agenda setting, framing, and selective exposure to the understanding of emerging media landscape. -
4
Communication research methods
The goal is to equip students with solid communication research skills, both quantitative and qualitative, including content analysis, survey, in-depth interview, and ethnography.
