My name is Guo, Lei (郭蕾) and I am a professor at the School of Journalism, Fudan University (Shanghai). Previously, I was an associate professor in the Division of Emerging Media Studies at College of Communication, Boston University (BU), USA. I was also an affiliated faculty member at BU’s Department of Computer Science. In 2020, I was appointed as a founding faculty member at BU’s newly launched Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences.
I graduated with one B.A. in Journalism, and another in Chinese Literature & Linguistics from Fudan University, China (2008). I obtained an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, USA (2010) and a Ph.D. degree from the same department (2014).
My research focuses mainly on the development of media effects theories, news and information flow, and computational social science methodologies. My studies have been published in a number of leading peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Communication, Communication Research, New Media and Society, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly (JMCQ).
My edited book, The Power of Information Network: New Directions for Agenda Setting, introduces a new theoretical perspective to understand media effects in this emerging media landscape.
I have won a number of awards for my scholarship, including the Google Research Award, the JMCQ Outstanding Article Award, and top faculty paper awards at major communication conferences.
